England reach European Championship final

Denmark defeated in extra time

Harry Kane scores winning penalty

England have reached the final of the European Championship for the first time as Harry Kane's extra-time penalty secured a 2-1 win over Denmark in a pulsating semi-final at Wembley.

England will now face either Italy or Spain in the final on Sunday looking to win their first major tournament since the 1966 World Cup.

It was a night of high drama at Wembley as an own goal from Simon Kjaer had cancelled out Mikkel Damsgaard's fine free-kick to take the game to extra time.

Kane had the chance to win it in normal time but saw his penalty saved by Kasper Schmeichel, only to make amends in the second period of extra time.

The win was met with jubilation by the Wembley crowd and will give England huge belief that they can finally end their long wait for a major trophy.

Match report

England started the game brightly and took the lead in the 30th minute when Damsgaard's free-kick took a wicked deflection off Kjaer and flew into the net.

Denmark grew into the game and levelled ten minutes later when Damsgaard curled a stunning free-kick into the top corner.

The game remained evenly poised after the break and it was England who had the best chance to win it in normal time when Kane was brought down in the box.

The Tottenham striker saw his penalty saved by Schmeichel, but he made no mistake in the second period of extra time, sending Schmeichel the wrong way.

England held on for a famous victory and will now face either Italy or Spain in the final on Sunday.
