Pakistan Admits It Cannot Find Mpox Patient as Tighter Screening Comes to Airports

Pakistan Confirms First Case of Monkeypox in 2024

Pakistan has confirmed its first case of monkeypox in 2024, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The patient is a man from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa who recently returned from a Middle Eastern country.

Officials Yet to Confirm Infection

Health officials are still investigating the case and have not yet confirmed whether the patient is infected with monkeypox. The patient is currently in isolation and is being monitored for symptoms.

Tighter Screening at Airports

In response to the confirmed case, Pakistan has announced that it will be introducing tighter screening at airports for passengers arriving from countries where monkeypox is known to be circulating.

Nearly 8,000 Mpox Cases in DRC This Year

According to the WHO, there have been nearly 8,000 cases of monkeypox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) this year, including 384 deaths. Almost half of these deaths occurred in children under the age of 5.

Sweden Reports First European Case of Clade 1b

On Thursday, Sweden became the first European country to report a case of clade 1b monkeypox. Clade 1b is a more severe strain of the virus than the clade 2a strain that has been circulating in most other countries.
